Kendra squatted and asked Timothy, âLittle boy, you havenât told me. Whatâs your name? How old are you?â
Timothy looked at Kendra before replying, âMy name is Timothy Ryker. Iâm four years old.
âWhere is your home? What are your parentâs names?â
Timothy did not want to mention Abel, let alone admit that he was Alanaâs child. After thinking about it, he lowered his head and answered, âMy mommy is Emmeline Louise.â
âEmmeline⦠Louise?â Kendra frowned, then asked, âDo you have any siblings?â
Timothy shook his head.
âOnly you?â
Timothy nodded.
âWhatâ¦â
Kendra froze as if she had thought of a terrible thing.
âHey, this kid isnât stupid!â Ella became happy again. âThatâs good!â
Kendra said coldly, âMom, heâs a poor boy. Donât try to do something bad!â
âDonât think me wrongly!â Ella beamed. âI just think we can ask his parents for some remuneration.â
âI donât want to go home!â Timothy yelled, âDonât send me to Daddy! I donât want to!â
Kendra comforted him, âCalm down. I didnât say I would send you to your father. After you think about it, Iâll follow your decision, okay?
Timothy nodded. âThank you, Auntie.â
âAre you hungry? Want me to make something for you?â
Timothy looked at Kendra and nodded.
Ellaâs expression was sullen. âBut we have nothing extra for him. Youâve spent all the living expenses my son gave you.â
âMom, how can you say that?â Kendraâs eyes were reddish. âYou know how much living expenses your son gives me. I have to give you money for playing cards, take care of the familyâs expenses, and the babyâs milk powder. Not to mention that I didnât buy anything. Even if itâs just for household use, the money isnât enough!â
âThen you can return to Brookwater Wellness Center to be a nurse! Why did you marry my son? Iâm looking forward to having a grandson, but you gave birth to a girl! You have no reason to complain!â
Kendraâs expression darkened, and she did not answer.
âYou also know that the Brookwater Wellness Center is over. There was a murder case, and the center was closed. You have no place to earn money, right?â
Ella scolded coldly, âThen stay home to care for your child, do the housework, and serve me! Your daughter doesnât need to drink milk. Just make her some cereal!â
âBut Iâm working as a part-time worker. I donât eat and drink for free. I can earn my daughterâs milk powder by myself!â
âHow much money can you earn? Buy milk powder? Itâs not even enough for me to play cards!â
Timothy was listening. Although he did not understand what Ella and Kendra were arguing about, he felt annoyed. It was not a place where he could stay.
So, Timothy turned around and wanted to leave âWait!â Ella grabbed him. âDid I let you go?â
Timothy almost fell when Ella pulled him. He immediately cried aggrievedly.
âMom, what are you doing?â Kendra pulled Timothy over. âDonât scare him!â
âI didnât!â Ella said, âItâs dark outside and dangerous for him to go out.â
She pulled Timothy from Kendraâs arms and said, âI can afford your meal. You stay here for now.â
âMom.â Kendra frowned. âI told you not to think something bad. If you lose in cards, I can give you the money. I havenât bought the babyâs milk powder, and thereâre two hundred dollars. You take it first. Donât scare Timothy.â
âYou still have two hundred dollars?â Ellaâs eyes sparkled. âWhy didnât you say it earlier? Give me quickly! I want to play cards!â
Kendra sighed and took out two hundred dollars from her wallet.
Ella snatched it away, opened the door, and left.
Timothy looked at Kendra and asked, âAuntie, did I bother you?â
