LILY POV I stood outside Dimitris office, trying to get the words in my head to come together. After my heat broke, Iâd avoided him until I no longer felt like a total w***e. I mean, Iâd thrown myself at him, literally. But heâd been right; I was so happy he hadnât given into me. Heâd gained a lot of my respect. Iâd slept at Hazels last night, not ready to face him yet, but she encouraged me to just rip the band-aid off. Come and apologize, and leave. Easy.
âCome in.â
Taking one more deep breath, I turned the knob and walked in, avoiding his gaze.
âHey. How are you feeling?â
âFine.â I replied quietly.
He motioned for me to take a seat, so I did. Folding my hands in my lap, I looked at my shoes.
âYou wanted something?â Dimitri asked.
My mouth opened. Closed. I licked my dry lips, trying to get myself together.
âI uh,-â I cleared my throat. âI wanted to apologize.â I spoke quickly.
âWhat for?â
âFor⦠you know.â My cheeks felt way too hot. I probably looked like a tomato.
Dimitri raised his eyebrows.
âFor what happened. The other night.â
âWhen you attacked me in a l**t and hormone induced frenzy?â His lips twitched, like he was trying to hide a smile, and impossibly, my face grew redder.
âYeah.â I squeaked. âThat.â
âLily, you donât need to apologize. Your heat isnât something you can control. Nor how you act during it.â
âStill.â I looked at a picture on the wall. âYou had to avoid your own room because of me.â
âYou know why I left.â
I chanced a peek at him, seeing that he was gazing at me tenderly.
âOkay. Well, thatâs all I came to say.â Standing, I quickly walked to the door.
âLily.â
Ah, so close.
âDimitri, I really-â
âLily, look at me.â
Slowly, I turned back to him.
âI donât accept your apology, because thereâs no reason for it. You didnât do anything wrong.â
âSure feels like it.â I mumbled and he chuckled quietly.
âDo you wish it had turned out differently?â He asked.
âNo. Iâm glad you left. Now, anyways.â I told him honestly.
âAnd I knew you would.â
I thought for a minute, gathering my courage. âDo you?â
âNo.â He stood and slowly walked to stand in front of me. âDonât take that the wrong way, please. Just know I would never take advantage of you that way.â He tucked my hair behind my ear.
I knew he was referring to me accusing him of not wanting me.
âThank you. And I do know that. I trust you.â
Our eyes met, his surprised.
âYou do?â
âYes.â
Perhaps I didnât at first, but now? Okay, I didnât trust him one hundred percent, but what he did couldnât have been easy. It said something about him, about the kind of man he was. And I liked that man more and more. He smiled, happiness shining on his features. The unexpected expression caught me off gaurd and made my heart throb.
âI want to hold your Luna ceremony tomorrow night.â He suddenly dropped on me. âI know itâs not much time, but Thara agreed to take you out, get you ready. Iâm arranging everything else.â
âUhm, okay.â Itâs not like I could say no.
âAlso, before you goâ¦â He walked back to his desk, picking up a peach coloured piece of paper. âThis is an invitation to the Alpha Ball.â
That rang a dim bell. The Ball was held at Snow Moon one year, some ten years back. Iâd been a child, but I remembered admiring all the Lunas, looking stunning in their dresses, like princesses.
âYouâre attending?â I asked. I took the paper from him, scanning it.
âI have to.â His tone said he would rather do anything else. âI was hoping you would go with me? It is customary, but really, I just donât want to attend another one alone. Itâs brutal.â
I pointed to the bottom of the invitation. âIs this the menu?â
âSome of it, yes.â
âYeah, Iâll go.â
Dimitri laughed openly, the sound like music.
âAnything else?â I smiled at him.
âNo, I think thatâs everything.â He sobered. I handed him back the invitation, his hand lingering on mine. âCome back to the room tonight.â
âOkay.â
I left feeling much lighter than before. On my way down the stairs, I bumped into Silvia.
âLuna Lily!â
âHi Silvia. How are you?â
âIâm good. Better.â She smiled.
âIâm glad to hear it. What are you doing here?â
âThe Alpha gave me a job here!â She excalimed. âWithout Connor warrior salary, I had to move back in with my parents. Alpha came to see me, and was kind enough to offer me a job as a maid in the packhouse. I couldnât say no.â She grinned.
My heart melted. âThatâs wonderful Silvia. Iâm happy things are looking up for you.â
âThank you Luna. For everything. I donât know what I would have done if you werenât here.â She threw her arms around me, surprising me.
âI just did what anyone else would have.â I said.
âNo, you did more. Much more.â She gave me another huge smile when she released me, saying she had to go back to her duties and we would catch up later. I felt a foreign feeling of pride well up inside me. Had I really had that much of an impact on her?
I walked to the pack hospital, a small smile on my face the whole way. Various pack members greeted me, excited by the news of finally having an official Luna.
âHey you.â Thara was signing forms when I located her.
âHey.â
âCome with me. Thereâs a patient in two-oh-six who needs stitches.â
I followed her brisk walk, sidestepping gurneys and people waiting to see other patients. Donning a pair of gloves and pumping some sanitziation onto my hand, I followed her into a room with a grumpy looking guy, probably in his mid-forties. He had a deep laceration up his right arm, dried b***d covering the skin.
âHello Bill. What happened this time?â Thara asked as she examined the wound.
âThat damned chainsaw got away from me again. I swear Thara, Iâm going to sue the company!â I blew out angrily, causing his white beard to sway. He kind of reminded me of a not-so-cheery Santa Claus.
âI see Hayley already cleaned the wound. Iâll get you fixed up and youâll be perfect in no time. Oh, this is my new assisstant, Luna Lily.â She gestured to me as she walked around the room gathering supplies.
âLuna?â Bill was surprised.
âHello Bill.â I said politely.
âNow whatâs the Luna of B***d Moon doing here?â
I shrugged. âI like helping people. Thara is teaching me.â
He eyed me for a moment. âWell, pleased to make your aquaintence Luna Lily. Nice to see a fresh face âround here.â
âIt sounds like youâre here often.â
âOn a first name basis with most of the staff, itâs true.â He hissed as Thara applied the ointment to his wound. âDamn woman, that stings!â
âCall me âwomanâ again, and Iâll pour the whole bottle on it.â
Bill laughed heartily while Thara and I smiled.
âLily, do you want to do this one?â
âReally?â
âI think youâre ready. You okay with that Bill?â
âI get the honor of being our Lunas first patient?â
âYes sir.â
âHow can I say no to that?â
I sat on the stool, adjusting the light over Bills arm. I worked slowly, precisely. Just like Thara taught me. Pulling the thread through to close the skin, I made sure to keep them an even space apart. Bill was the perfect patient, never twitching or complaining. When I was done, I looked at Thara for approval.
âVery well done Lily. It looks great!â
I beamed.
I went to wash my hands, throwing the gloves in the trash as Thara gave Bill the usual care speech.
âThat man really needs a new hobby.â She joined me at the sink.
âWhat does he do?â
âHe carves sculptures from wood, huge ones. I donât know how gets anything done though, heâs in here all the time.â
Leaning against the counter I said, âDimitri told me you had plans with me.â
âI sure do. Meet me by my car tomorrow morning, around eight. No training, weâre having a girls day.â
âWhich entails?â
âSalon, spa, shopping. Not necessarily in that order. And then back here to get you ready for the ceremony.â
âEveryone seems to know about it.â
âDimitri sent out a pack wide announcment. Most will be there.â
She must have seen the nerves on my face because she placed a hand on my shoulder.
âItâll be fine Lily. I already think of you as my Luna, official or not. Youâre exactly what this pack needs.â
âIâm not so sure.â
âTrust me. Put aside your doubts and worries, for one night at least.â
âIâll try.â
She smiled and handed me a folder for another patient. I scanned it, trying to believe in myself as much as she seemed to.
