âReaper!â Sistielle called out to her friend.
A beautiful woman with long black hair and a rather generous bust stepped forward. She was Reaperâthe goddess of death, and sister to Sistielle. Many believed the gods of life and death were eternal enemies, but in truth, they were family who lived side by side. Life and death. Order and freedom. Night and day. Two sides of the same coin.
âThat was uncalled for,â Reaper pouted. âWhy did you change my name?â
âWell, apparently one of our little games got leaked on Earth and turned into a mediocre web novel. So I tweaked our names to avoid suspicion,â Sistielle said casually.
âThatâs because you leaked it, didnât you? What about the one before that? And the one before that?â Reaper grumbled.
âHey, that last one had a great ending! The players even managed to wound you, Repeara,â Sistielle said, grinning from ear to ear. The joy from her previous victory was still fresh on her face.
âGuh! Iâll make sure you lose horribly this time,â Reaper was fuming, plopping down into a chair and crossing her arms.
With a snap of her fingers, a tea table appeared between them, complete with delicate porcelain cups. A round ghost floated in to serve themâchamomile for Reaper, jasmine for Sistielle.
Even as she sipped her favorite tea, Reaperâs sour mood refused to lift. Her mind was already spinning, thinking about the next round of their never-ending divine game.
âSo,â she said, âwhat changes are we making this time?â
âWell, Iâve decided to switch things up. This time, Iâm blessing Alicia,â Sistielle said.
Reaper raised an eyebrow. âThatâs a surprise. I thought youâd go with Claire again. And you're picking an otherworlder this time? Whatâs so special about that brat? He looked like a NEET you could find anywhere.â
Sistielle just smiled. âShe has potential.â
âHmph. Well, Iâm still sticking with Elidranthia. Sheâs amusing.â
âBut Sana was an otherworlder. We canât use her again. Shall we go with the original Eli?â Sistielle asked.
âPlease. Youâve got to be kidding me,â Reaper scoffed. âThere are plenty of other disabled kids out there. Iâm not using that invalid bitch again even if I could. I gave her the world, and she dared to wound me.â She pouted, arms crossed. After a moment of pondering, she asked, âAnd honestly, why does it always have to be an invalid anyway?â
âWell, Sana was literally an invalid. She spent her entire life in a hospital bed, remember?â
âShit⦠the book version of that arcâs already out, huh? Nathanâs read it, hasnât he?â
âYes. If he finds out Elidranthia wasnât some poor, tragic reincarnated girl who suffered all her life, heâll kill her without a second thought. That wouldnât be fun.â
âHm⦠good point. So... got any candidates?â
âI do, actually,â Sistielle replied, handing Reaper a tablet. âTake a look. Anyone catch your eye?â
Reaper scrolled lazily through the list of namesâuntil her finger stopped, and a grin slowly spread across her face.
âThere we go,â she said, eyes gleaming. âA disposable child soldier. Bilateral leg amputee. Fought in Afghanistan. Trained with firearms from age six. At ten, she suicide-bombed a U.S. embassyâbut survived. Later switched sides in exchange for clemency. Two years of rehab. Further training. By the time she was seventeen, sheâd assassinated ten high-ranking targets. Then, just when she was supposed to be rewarded with US citizenship, the FBI killed and dumped her body like garbage.â
She chuckled darkly. âSheâs perfect.â
Sistielle blinked and took the tablet from her. âWow⦠how did you even find her? Earth is even more messed up than our world.â
âI read,â Reaper said smugly. âYou should try it sometime instead of playing with computers all day.â
âSo, whatâs the goal? If Eli dies, I loseâand if Alicia dies, I win. Thatâs it?â Reaper asked.
âHm⦠the destruction of the world should count too,â Sistielle mused. She glanced at the glowing world map in front of herâUmbraluxian, the continent of light and shadow. âShould we bring demons into it again, like the last few games? Or go for a world war, like the ones before that?â
Reaper raised an eyebrow. âEli will conquer the world. Iâm giving her the power to govern death. Not just those mindless zombies from beforeâreal vampires. With that, sheâll take everything.â
âSo no world war? No demons?â
âNah. We donât need them this time.â She waved her hand dismissively. âNow hush. Go hide in a corner or something. Iâm starting the interview.â
âIâll be watching~â Sistielle sang, before vanishing into light, her presence fading into shimmering motes.
Before Reaper, golden light swirled and condensed, slowly taking the shape of a girl.
A petite brunette lay on the ground, barely one and a half meters tall. Her body looked thin and delicate, like it might snap in a strong breeze. Malnutrition in her early years as a child soldier had stunted her growth, even though sheâd regained some health during her time with the U.S. Intelligence Department. She looked far younger than her age.
The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.
Reaper grinned. The resemblance to Elidranthia was uncannyâexcept for the hair.
âFuck you! I swear, Iâm gonna kill you!â the girl shouted the moment she regained her consciousness, fists clenched. âWait⦠where the hell am I?â
Her rage faltered as her surroundings registered. The endless white. The divine presence. Her target was gone. Confused, she looked around, her voice dropping.
âAm I⦠dead?â Her eyes finally met Reaperâs. âAh, umâGoddessâcould you maybe ignore what I said just now?â
The girl panicked.
Sheâd never believed in religionâalways thinking God was just a tool for manipulation, a fairy tale used for propaganda. But now, staring at a literal goddess cloaked in black, her worldview shattered. Her gaze flicked to the womanâs clothing.
Was this hell? No... the room was white. Pure and still. Maybe this was the place where souls were judged.
She quickly scrambled to form excuses in her head.
Yes, she had killed a lot of peopleâbut none of it had been her decision. She was only following orders. That should count for something, right?
The girl in the white tunic remained calm and composed as she stood up. When Laila noticed her legs were intact again, it confirmed what she already suspected.
She was in the afterlife.
âGreetings, Laila,â the woman said with a serene smile. âMy name is Repeara. I am a goddess. You have been chosen as a candidate to be reincarnated into another world. Will you accept the offer?â
It was almost the same line Sistielle had used.
âHuh? Another world? Iâm not here to be judged?â Laila blinked, confused.
âErm⦠no. Weâre offering you a chance to redo your life. In another world.â
âWhy?â she asked, narrowing her eyes.
âChild,â Repeara said gently, âwe have seen your life on Earth. It must have been hard, right? You served your country so loyally. And what did you get in return? Scorn. Betrayal. In the end, they threw you away like a dog. So now, my child... I shall give you a chanceâto decide your own fate.â
âYes! Iâll be a good girl! So please, donât send me to hell!â Laila blurted, nodding rapidly.
She was lying, of course.
Years of training had made her a natural at it, and Repeara saw through it immediately. But she wasnât angry. In fact, the lie only made her smile.
This girl was exactly what she was looking for.
âYou donât need to pander to me, child,â Repeara said. âFrom this point forward, your fate is yours alone. You can become a bloodthirsty queen⦠or a shadow ruler who manipulates nations from behind the scenes. Itâs up to you.â
âEh?â Laila tilted her head, confused. âShouldnât I be doing good things to go to heaven? Like, not killing people and stuff?â
Repeara didnât sound like a god. She wasnât giving commands or rules. Laila had assumed sheâd just be switching mastersâfrom a traitorous FBI handler to a divine one. But this⦠this freedom felt alien. Suspicious.
âIs killing really a bad thing?â Repeara asked calmly. âHave you ever heard of the trolley problem?â
âYes. I know it,â Laila nodded. âItâs the one where someone has to make a choice, right? Like if they flip the switch, two people die, but five people are saved. And if they donât flip the switch, five people die instead.â
âIâm sure your boss thought the same,â Repeara said softly. âThat if they didnât kill those people, even more would die. Thatâs why they ordered you to kill.â
âI just wanted to live a peaceful life!â Laila shouted, her voice cracking. âWhy did they have to kill me too?!â
âWell, deep down, you already knew the answer,â Repeara replied, her tone calm. âBut thatâs beside the point. This time, you wonât be reincarnated as a slave. Youâll be a nobleâand soon, be a princess, in a sense. But first, youâll be the first daughter of a count.â
âHm? First daughter? Of a count?â Laila repeated, puzzled.
âWell, think of a count like a prefectural leader,â Repeara explained. âJust below a governor, but a bit above a mayor. Your family will rule over several towns and villages.â
âWhy not a real princess or a queenâ¦â Laila muttered with a pout. Sure, it was better than being cannon fodder, but she immediately realizedâif she wasnât at the top, sheâd still be following orders.
âBeing a princess would be a bit too much for you right now,â Repeara said with a knowing smile. âBesides, royalty has its own dangers. If you make a mistake, you might not even survive your first month. And unlike the actual princess of that kingdom, you will have magic.â
âMagic?â Laila perked up.
âYes. Youâll be granted Level 6 Darkness Magic.â
âI see... so I have to marry the prince and become a queen, right?â Laila asked flatly.
âNo. Like I said, your life is yours to live,â Repeara reminded her. âYou can even abandon everythingâleave politics behind and settle in the countryside, raise a small family. With Level 6 magic, youâll never need to worry about money or safety.â
Laila stared at her, brows furrowed. âWhy are you being so nice? You havenât even given me a mission.â
Repeara chuckled. âI am the Goddess of Freedom, after all. But if I had to give you a mission⦠just be careful of Sistielleâs apostle. Sheâs the Goddess of Order. Her champion will come for you eventuallyâand in your current state, you wonât be able to beat her.â
âSo⦠I should run the moment I see her?â Laila asked.
âThat would be wise,â Repeara nodded. âYou also need to level up. By killing living beings, youâll gain experience and unlock new skills. Eventually, youâll surpass her.â
âWaitâshe canât level up?â
âNo. Sistielleâs apostle canât gain new skills or grow stronger. She was designed to be powerful from the startâbut stagnant. You, on the other hand, can evolve. So long as you survive and stay ahead, victory will be yours.â
âI see. How do I even find her? Or avoid her?â
âIf you sense someone abnormally powerfulâsomeone who feels out of placeâyouâve likely found her,â Repeara explained. âBut be careful. If you lock eyes, sheâll sense you immediately. So donât get caught staring.â
âI see⦠How many apostles are we talking about here?â
âJust one,â Repeara replied with a shrug. âItâs not like theyâre hiding in every church, waiting to ambush you.â
Laila let out a deep breath of relief. For a moment, sheâd pictured apostles hiding in every holy place like CIA agents, ready to put a bullet through her skull the moment she prayed.
âAlright⦠anything else I need to know?â
âStay safe. And may your life be fruitful,â Repeara said with a gentle smile. She waved her hand in farewell, and motes of white light surrounded Laila, carrying her awayâtoward her new life as Elidranthia, a blue-haired girl with dangerous potential.
As the light faded, Sistielle appeared beside Repeara.
âWow⦠you gave her less of a cheat than I expected,â Sistielle said, arms crossed.
âLevel 6 is more than enough,â Repeara replied. âHer core strength isnât in her base magic. Itâs in the vampirism. Once she kills her first human, sheâll awaken blood magic. Thatâs where her true power begins.â
âI see. Alicia and Eli will meet about a week after they arrive. Are you sure Eli will be ready? You didnât even give her clairvoyance. Sheâll die the moment they clash, you know.â
âNah,â Repeara smirked. âIâll leave that to fate. Nathan shouldnât kill her immediatelyânot unless he knows who she really is. This time, you get all the buffs. Iâll wait and watch.â
âFine. Then I wonât hold back either,â Sistielle said. âIâm giving Alicia Earth and Wind Magic attributes. In addition, Iâll add Sword and Archery Masteries once she enters school.â
âHuh? Wait a minute. If you add that much, sheâll be totally broken!â
âWell, Iâll allow you to give Eli more cheats tooâas long as you loosen the growth curve when she starts killing humans.â
âFineâ¦â Reaper growled.
They both assumed Nathan wouldnât strike unless Elidranthia had blood on her hands. But emotions werenât so easily controlled. If Nathan felt like it, he might kill her on sightâand call it justice. That, too, would count as a win for Sistielle.
Even if it was⦠a bit boring.
âLet the game begin,â Repeara whispered.
The two goddesses took their seats and gazed at the shifting map of Umbraluxian, their divine game board now set.
