"Ouch!" I whispered yelled when I landed on the ground. The thin layer of snow stuck to my clothes and hands. Slowly I pushed myself up and dusted off the snow.

As I planned, the guards were not on this side. Thankfully. I let out a breath of relief and picked up my bag that was lying on the ground.

The night was cold and snow was falling, peacefully coating the ground and the tall trees.

What I hated the most about living here was that we were in the middle of nowhere and also... my family.

Yes, I hated my family.

And that's why I was running away. They can't keep me here forever. Since I turned eighteen Dad wouldn't let me leave. Wasn't it supposed to be the other way? When I turn eighteen I should have been more free.

Nah, not with my family apparently.

Being a daughter of the very well know and respected Mafia Boss was not something I would wish on anyone. Well if you were a guy you might have enjoyed this lifestyle, but a girl?

I would rather be homeless.

My dad Sergei Dimitriev, was the head of the family and whatever he said, we had to follow, but not today Dad. I won't be stuck here till you find a husband for me.

Probably some old man. No, thank you.

I turned my head around looking if someone was outside. The few strands of hair that were falling down, were sticking to my face and I annoyingly pushed them aside.

Lurking around the house, my heart beat increasing with each passing moment.

This was my plan for a long time. I had made literally a whole journal on how I'll escape this prison that's called my home.

I couldn't take it anymore. I was not meant for this type of life. I wanted something more for myself. Poetry and writing books, that's what I was meant to do. I wanted people to know about the stories and tales I write.

But with this lifestyle that was not possible. So, I was going to escape. At age twenty-three, I finally found the courage to do so.

My eyes looked around, in every corner to see if any of the guards are where they are not supposed to be.

I might have tricked Adrian, one of the bodyguards and told him to wait for me at the gazebo on the other side of the yard. Bating my eyelashes and showing more cleavage than usual did the job.

Did he really think that I was going to meet him there? He was literally married. Disgusting pig. But it was in my advance, at least he won't be around now. When I'm trying to get away.

I don't know what will happen to the guards after I escape but I had to think about myself as well.

I couldn't stay here just to save their lives.

It might be selfish of me but I've had enough of putting other people in front of me. I had to do something for myself as well. I deserved it.

I slowly tip-toed to the fence and threw my bag over my shoulder. I might have made a bad decision of not dressing up in something warmer but it was too late now.

Bracing myself on the fence, I climbed it and jumped over. My breathing relaxed when the alarm didn't go off. But of course, I thought of that beforehand as well. I might have been sheltered here but I made sure to learn as much as I could.

I knew exactly how everything worked here and also made sure to learn about the Mafia. When it came to that matter, it was pretty hard to find out stuff since everything was kept a secret. Every little word and action was locked in a safe and never revealed to me or my mom.

I knew there were a lot more families involved but i knew hardly of them. Only stories.

Me and mom didn't really attend any of the events my dad and brother would go to. I wasn't allowed to leave this place if it was not with one of them.

My shoes were definitely going to get soaked but I had to hurry up.

The other thing I have planned is to steal a car. There was one parked at the front of the gates. It was my uncle's. He was visiting us for couple of days. I made sure he did, because I was the one to invite him.

My uncle was not as cruel as my dad but he was still his brother and they shared the same blood.

Also, I made sure to steal the keys. It was not an easy task but I was determined to do it. As I said, I have been planning this for a long time and I had to secede.

I threw the hoodie over my head and basically crouched down and walked with hurried steps. The car was parked a few feet away and I almost sprinted there.

When I opened the door and sat on the seat, a chuckle left my lips. It was throaty and filled with adrenaline. I tightened my hold on the wheel and let out a deep breath. I didn't have a driving license but I knew how to drive.

Jovan, my brother didn't even question when I asked him to teach me.

Little did he know.

Now I had to quickly start the car and drive off. I didn't have too much time since I didn't want them following me of course. They can look for me after I'm far away from here.

I had to get out of the country. It will be hard but I'll manage somehow. I had to. I didn't have any other choice.

Starting the car, I pressed on the pedal and drove off. It was more of an old-style car.

My eyes averted to the side mirror and there was no one behind me. I was driving for about ten minutes now and there was still one one behind me.

At least for now.

As I said we were in the middle of nowhere, the road was empty and decorated with snow. The tall trees surrounded the straight path and the only light illuminating the road was the car lights and the full moon.

It almost looked peaceful. But my heart was far away from peace.

It was beating in my chest, like trying to break free from the ribcage that was surrounding it.

"You'll get away from here Evangelina," I murmured to myself.

I had no idea where I was going or where this road lead but I'm sure there will be some type of sign somewhere close.

The car was cold and I had no idea how to start the AC.

My breaths were getting shorter and I had to quickly grab my inhaler.

I extended my hand to the passenger seat where my bag was and tried to open it with one hand. The other one was holding the wheel.

My fingers grabbed the zipper but the bag slipped away and fell on the floor by the seat.

"Shit!" I yelled.

I had to get it. I lowered myself down trying to reach it. Just when I grabbed it, I straightened myself and the lights blinded my vision.

The loud crash echoed through my ears and I felt my body jerk forward. The seatbelt cut through me like a knife and I felt my face bounce on the airbag in front of me.

What was happening?

My vision was somehow clear but my head throbbed. It was like someone smashed it against a wall.

Slowly, I brought my hand to my temples and winced at the pain. My breaths were still getting short and before I did anything else I had to grab the inhaler that was now in my lap and inhaled a deep breath.

I leaned my head back and tried to gather myself.

When I realized that I just had a car accident panic started to raise in my chest.

I grabbed the knob of the door and tried to open it. When I seceded, I slowly stepped out. There was smoke filling the air around me and then I spotted the other car.

There wasn't much damage but still, my car was ruined.

A man appeared in my vision and I saw his lips move but I barely made out what he was saying. He was close to his car and was slowly making his way to me.

When he stepped on the light, my mouth stayed open. It was a guy, not older than thirty. He was dressed in a white shirt and black slacks. A black coat covered his shoulders. His black hair was pushed back and now damp because of the light snow falling around us.

"Are you okay?" The buzzing in my head stopped and I finally made out the words he said.

"Umm, I don't..." I didn't even know anymore. I should have been on my way to freedom but now my car is crashed.

His steps got closer to me and stayed in my place.

"I'm sorry, it's my fault. I was driving slower than I should have. I was on the phone..."

"It's okay. I..." I Interrupted him. Placing my hands on my hips I turned around to take another look at the car.

"Are you sure you're okay?" He spoke again.

I stayed silent and didn't move a muscle. I have to go. I don't have time. Taking a step forward, I made my way to the car and got inside. Trying to start it, I failed.

Trying a couple of more times, nothing. It was not working. The struggling sounds of the engine roared around me but still nothing.

"It's not working." The man was now next to my window and was peeking inside. The silver chain was dangling around his neck. He rested his hands on the door and I noticed the ink covering his fingers.

"Let me try it." He said and I nodded, getting out.

He went inside on the place where I was seconds ago and tried. His strong hands gripped the wheel.

"Yeah, it's not working," I whined and rubbed my face in frustration.

"It has to work," I whispered.

He got out and I just noticed that he was towering over me. His strong perfume consumed me.

"If you want... I can take you wherever you're going. My car is still fine." I tilted my head to get a better look at him. His dark eyes radiated nothing but kindness.

Would it be safe to get in the car with a stranger?

It's not like I had any other choice. Where am I gonna go anyways? I'll freeze here. Also, I can't risk my dad finding me.

"I promise I'll just take you to the place where you're going. If you don't want to, I can call the police and they'll help you. I'll take the whole blame on me."

"No police, please." I didn't have driving license and they probably knew my dad and will take me back to him.

He stared into my eyes and waited for my further answer.

I tapped my leg on the ground in nervousness. The cold caresses my skin and the snow sank into my clothes and hair.

He lifted his eyebrows.

"Okay." The word left my lips quietly.

He smiled and nodded. He took off his coat. "Can I?" He extended his hands. I just stared at him. He slowly placed the coat over my fragile body and a warmness immediately wrapped around me like a welcome hug.

"Thank you."

"It's fine, let's go."

I grabbed the bag from the car and followed behind him. He opened the door for me and I stepped in, sinking into the leather seat. His car was surprisingly warm and pleasant.

His scent was everywhere.

He then rounded the car and sat on his seat as well. Running a hand over his hair, he got rid of the snow and I quietly observed the way few strands of his hair fell down his forehead. Then my eyes flew to his earring. Then to his perfectly carved nose and plump lips.

The chain around his neck glistened and there was a small tattoo behind his ear. It was three letters in cursive. I couldn't make out which one.

"Where to?" His smooth voice brought me back to reality.

Where should I go now? I was planning to leave the country.

"To the... to the train station please," I mumbled the words and tightened my hands around myself.

He just hummed and started the car. I watched the picture behind us, the smoke, the car, the lights,...

There was muffled noice playing on the radio. The atmosphere filled me with nervousness but I had to remain calm.

I roamed my eyes around. Looking, observing.

"What made you go out now? At this time of the night? It's snowy and also kind of late to be traveling on your own."

I intertwined my fingers and played with the bag in my lap.

"My grandpa got sick and I have to visit him." I lied. "I couldn't wait."

"Mhmm. I also have a good relationship with my grandpa. He practically raised me." I just nodded not knowing want to say.

Few minutes went buy and none of us spoke again. We were still not on the highway and the streets were still dark and no sign in sight.

All of a sudden a heard a click.

Did he lock the doors?

I turned my head to him.

"They automatically lock." He said, his eyes focused on the road. I did said anything just stared at him.

Trying to find a lie in his words. Was he telling the truth?

My heart rammed against my ribcage and my hands started to shake. I bit my lip to prevent my chin from trembling and I ranked my eyes over his hands.

The sleeves of the shirt has ridden up and there was a tattoo peaking from underneath. Squeezing my eyes I tried to get a better look. It was a dragon wrapped up in a Sakura leaves. There was a red machete sword piercing through.

I've seen this before, but where?

He chuckled lightly. Showing the row of straight teeth. A small gem glistened on one of his tooth.

"Are you looking at my tattoo, Evangelina?" He turned his face to me.

My body stilled and I felt a chill run down my spine.

It was like I was splashed with cold water.

My heart stopped for a second and my brain froze.

I never told him my name.

"Cat got your tongue, little rabbit?"

No.

No.

NO.

This was not happening.

This was not true.

I was definitely in a nightmare.

This was... this man was...

My dad's biggest enemy.

In his hands.

I was the hands of the most known cold-blooded killer.

The leader of the Japanese family.

Asahi.

👀

Another Mafia story.

What did you think of this one?

Evangelina was little naive going into the car with him but what can we say. She's been sheltered her whole life.

If anyone is interested on this one I might write a second part.

Did a little aesthetic boards for the characters...

ASAHI
