Quinton glanced at the ice cream stand and then told Ms. Mendoza, âYou head upstairs; Iâll stand in line and get your ice cream. Let me know your flavor.â
âVanilla.â Ellinor said, pulling out a bill from her bag and handing it to him, âHereâs the cash.â
Just as Quinton was about to refuse it. Ellinorâs gaze turned stern.
It seemed like Ms. Mendoza wasnât going anywhere unless he took the money.
With no other choice, Quinton reluctantly accepted the money and went to queue up.
With someone else waiting in line for the ice cream, Ellinor went upstairs.
Who knew that sheâd bump into an old acquaintance as soon as she got in the elevator?
A woman, all dolled up with red lipstick, looked at Ellinor stepping into the elevator, paused for a second, and then said sarcastically, âI was wondering who you are! Arenât you Ellinor? Mr. Howardâs former secretary, who got a promotion to sales manager?â
Ellinor recognized her too; she was an employee from the Howard Group.
After Balfour transferred her to the sales department, this woman took her place as Balfourâs secretary, though she couldnât remember her name.
Ellinor didnât waste her energy on unimportant people, so she just nodded and smiled, âYeah, long time no see.â
The woman deliberately moved closer to Ellinor, scoffing. âI heard you were fired by Mr. Howard! What brings you here today?â
Ellinor replied casually, âLunch.â
The woman frowned and chuckled, âYouâre here for lunch? Ellinor, do you think our company is some kind of diner? Thatâs hilarious!â
Ellinor glanced at the rising elevator floor numbers and yawned out of boredom, âOh, I think itâs pretty funny too.â
The woman felt annoyed by Ellinorâs dismissive attitude. She didnât believe she was just here for lunch, so she tried to pry a bit more, âHey! Ellinor! Tell me the truth; what are you really here for? Are you trying to get your job back?â
Ellinor turned her head and looked at her, âWhy are you so curious about me?â
The woman rolled her eyes, âWeâre colleagues; canât I show some concern?â
Of course, it was more than just curiosity. She had been sent by Mr. Howardâs sister, Patricia, to keep an eye on Ellinor and report any updates about her.
But not long after, Mr. Howard fired Ellinor and she lost touch with Patricia.
Now that Ellinor showed up at the office again, she planned to dig out what she was up to and then use this chance to reconnect with Patricia, report the situation, and build a better relationship, hoping Patricia could give her a promotion.
But Ellinor ignored her.
The woman didnât give up; she asked again, but Ellinor still didnât respond. She started getting pissed off.
âHey! Ellinor, Iâm talking to you!â
âDo you think youâre too good to talk to me?â
âEllinor, what makes you so arrogant? You were just a sales manager for a few days, and then you got fired by Mr. Howard!
If youâre here to reapply for a job, I must tell you, the sales manager position is already taken. And the person who got it has a higher degree, better skills, and is way better than you. Thereâs no way you can get this position back!â
