Ellinor strolled into the living room with a polite smile on her face. âMr. Arnold, Mrs. Mendoza, long time no see.â
âMr. Arnold?â
At the sound of this, Arnold, who already looked like heâd swallowed a lemon, looked even more tense.
What did you call me?â
Ellinor seated herself on a solitary couch, some distance away from them. She accepted the coffee a maid brought her, took a sip, and said, âI called you Mr. Arnold. Is there a problem? Arenât you Mr.
Arnold?â
Arnold wasnât her biological father, nor had he done much of anything fatherâlike. After shipping her off to the sticks, heâd pretty much disappeared from her life âEllinor, donât you dare think that joining the Blanchet family means you can forget where you came from and even deny me as your father! You know exactly how you became Mrs. Blanchet, He snapped.
Ellinor raised an eyebrow. âHow I became Mrs. Blanchet? Seems like youâve got it all figured out.â
Before Arnold could respond, Sheila jumped in, all fired up. âNot just dad, mom and I know tool Ellinor, thereâs no such thing as a secret that stays secret forever. Stop playing innocent and own up to your mistakes. Maybe, just maybe, Iâll forgive you, for old timesâ sake.â
Ellinor laughed. âYou forgive me? Sheila, why exactly are you in my house, offering me your forgiveness?â
âMy houseâ. Those words were like a thorn in Sheilaâs side. It felt like something that was hers had been taken from her. âYour house? Ellinor, youâve got some nerve! This is my house!â
Tracy tried to play peacemaker. âEllinor, why wonât you listen to reason? We already know you took Sheilaâs place and married Mr. Blanchet. You canât hide it anymore! Just kneel down and apologize to your dad and Sheila.â
âAnd how did you find out about this?â Ellinor narrowed her eyes.
Her counterâquestion seemed like an admission of guilt to the Mendozas.
Arnold was growing angrier and angrier. He pointed a finger at Ellinor and started to rant. âEllinor, I canât believe I raised a daughter like you! No morals whatsoever! How could you steal your own sisterâs husband and make the Mendozas a laughing stock on the day of the wedding! I should never have let you come back from the countryside!*
Ellinor found this amusing.
Sheâd come to Greenhaven because sheâd won a full scholarship to Creston University due to her excellent academic record.
Had Arnold ever really taken care of her at all?
Ellinor had a hunch about their intentions when she saw Sheila picking a fight with Devin upstairs But the question was, who spilled the beans about her becoming Mrs. Blanchet?
Seeing Ellinor fall silent, Sheila pounced. âEllinor! Say something!â
Ellinor sighed and lowered her head, looking like she was too ashamed to meet anyoneâs eyes. âIf you all already know that, what do you plan to do with me?â
