After the room emptied, Madeline quietly leaned closer and whispered, âMom, donât you think youâre overreacting? Even if Dad accidentally hit you, heâs apologized so much. Why canât you forgive him?â
Imogen, however, shared with her, âDo you know what? The moment he hit me, I was reminded of him.â
âWho?â Madeline asked nonchalantly.
âThe man responsible for us living in that damp, dark basement for years. Your biological father.â
Imogen took Madelineâs hand, âI know you donât like hearing about the past, but itâs time you knew about him. He struggled with his business and often took out his frustrations on me, especially after drinking. Thatâs when I met Francis. That was how I was determined to be with him. He gave me the strength to leave and promised a better life, leaving the hell behind.
âBut to think he would raise a hand to me⦠Can you imagine? My supposed savior getting more and more similar to that demon. How can I not be scared?â
Madeline was too young to remember Domingo Skinnerâs abuse, as she would be locked away in a small room during those times. So, she couldnât fully grasp what her mother was saying.
âMom, are you just anxious because of the pregnancy? I saw Dad, and he was genuinely remorseful.
He just lost his temper because of Regina, that witch.â
âDonât you see? Nowâs our chance! With Regina pushing Dad away, itâs the perfect time for us to step in.â
Madeline was all eyes for Nolan, even now urging Imogen to help her make Dad invite Regina over more often.
But Imogen couldnât let her daughter continue unchecked.
âLet that idea go. I wonât allow it.â
âWhy not? Arenât you my real mom? Why wonât you help me?â
Madeline looked at her in disbelief.
âSweetie, of course, I am your mom. I love you, Iâd give you the world if I could. But Nolan and the Harris family are out of our league. Didnât you see how your dad was around him? They donât even consider the Tanner family worthy. He barely agreed to dine with us to take Regina back. If not for her, he wouldnât step foot here. Drop these unrealistic fantasies, and you were too obvious at dinner. He didnât glance your way once. Heâs not into you, Madeline. Itâs time to face reality.â
Madeline couldnât handle the truth. She furiously shrugged off her motherâs hand and said, âYou just donât want to help, thinking itâs too much trouble. Sure, getting Nolanâs attention is tough, but what do I lack? Iâm as pretty as Regina, if not more. Why should that witch get the better man? Canât you see the awkward tension between them?â
