âYeah, of course itâs you. Why else would I have gone through the trouble of roughing them up?â
Reginaâs heart swelled with an indescribable emotion as she gazed into Nolanâs eyes, which seemed to shimmer with unshed tears. Nolan, however, found it hard to meet her watery gaze.
He reached out and playfully covered her eyes with his hand. âGo on, ask.â
Backed by Nolan, Regina straightened her shoulders and strode confidently toward the group of henchmen, parading in front of them with a swagger. She felt like the fox swaggering under the tigerâs might.
âOkay, so you guys say your Boss was hoodwinked by someoneâs sweet talk. Who might that be?â
The henchmen exchanged nervous glances, none daring to be the first to name names. They knew all too well the trouble theyâd be in once Domingo got wind of their betrayal.
Regina clicked her tongue, âHow about this? Just nod or shake your heads. That way, even when Domingo wakes up, he wonât know who spilled the beans.â
Their eyes lit â
up at the suggestion a perfect solution!
âIs the woman pulling the strings behind Domingo, ordering you to dig up dirt on me, named Imogen?â
Their eyes bulged in shock, that she knew it all They couldnât hide anything now, and they all began nodding emphatically.
âGood, looks like my dear stepmother really has it out for me.â
Regina continued, âThe guy who handled the land now sold to the Harris Group, was it Domingo?â
Again, a sea of nods.
âAlright, at least youâre being straightforward. Now, I want to know, did you make good or your promise to those tenants? Did they get their new homes and the compensation they were promised?â
Reginaâs expression grew more severe, and the men hesitated, unsure whether to nod. They had done the deed, yes, but admitting it outright was a different matter altogether.
They knew all too well that they had forcefully stripped those people of the homes they had worked so hard to own.
âHuh, you sure can weigh your own interests, spilling all about your boss without reservation. But when it comes to owning up to the shady stuff youâve been a part of, you clam up. But what good does denying it do? Whatâs done doesnât vanish with time, and what I aim to do is expose you, to ensure you face the consequences you deserve.â
Reginaâs frown made everyone overlook her beautiful features; they realized then that they were facing a journalist!
After asking her three questions, Regina turned on her heel and walked back to Nolan.
âNot going to probe any further?â
Regina sighed, shaking her head, âNo, thereâs no point. Theyâre just minions following orders, after all.
Push too hard, and they might not end well. As a journalist, my job is to investigate on my own. Spoon-
fed answers just donât cut it.â
She needed only to confirm her suspicions; as for Imogen, that was family drama.
She wouldnât let that woman off the hook, plotting against her while playing the pitiful card in front of her father. It was nauseating.
âCome on, letâs head back.â
Only then did Nolan release Domingo, who immediately crumpled to the ground as Nolanâs firm grip let go.
