Watching Reginaâs pleading gaze, Nolan finally caved in with a nod. âYouâre impossible to say no to.
But Iâve got one condition: if things get dangerous, you pull out. No heroics.â
Regina hadnât expected to actually persuade him. She was so ecstatic she nearly jumped for joy, trotting over to Nolan with a beaming smile. âDonât worry, Iâm not completely clueless. Mr. Harris. I canât believe you agreed. Iâm so happy! Thank you!â
âAh, well, you kept harping on about how âchampioning justiceâ was your motivation as a journalist. How could I let you lose faith after a speech like that?â
Despite his words, a faint smile played on Nolanâs lips at Reginaâs happiness.
âBy the way,â Regina said, suddenly serious, âIâve been tracking Domingoâs whereabouts, and thereâs a good chance heâll show up at a nightclub tomorrow. Iâm not sure if the owner is one of his people, but I havenât been able to pin him down yet. Should we check it out?â
Her eyes sparkled with determination, and Nolan was somewhat surprised sheâd managed to dig up so much on her own. âWhoâs the nightclub owned by? Iâve got a list of his possible associates from my team â it might be on there.â
âItâs owned by a guy named Patton.
âHmm, youâre right. Heâs one of Domingoâs guys. Youâve got some real chops, Regina, hitting one of his hideouts right off the bat.â
Nolan pulled up the nightclubâs profile on his computer, raising an eyebrow in surprise. The city was riddled with such establishments â hybrids of karaoke bars, pool halls, and arcades catering to everyone from high schoolers to middle-aged patrons. No wonder Domingo hadnât bothered with real estate; he was already raking it in. And that was without considering his shadier dealings.
âI remember hearing they let juveniles in there. Arenât they supposed to be off-limits?â Regina frowned, concerned. Juveniles werenât supposed to be in places like that, lacking. the self-control and protection needed.
âClearly, Domingoâs not going to let a little thing like legality get in the way of his profits. He wouldnât care about ethics if he had money to crave for. Since youâve got the lead that heâll be there tomorrow, letâs go have a little chat with him.â
Regina nodded vigorously. âBut you canât show up in a suit and tie tomorrow, or weâll be made immediately.â
âWhat should I wear then?â Nolan was at a loss. His wardrobe consisted mainly of tailored suits and the occasional tracksuit for the gym.
âYouâre not telling me your closet is all suits, are you?â Regina looked at him in disbelief.
She was leaning close to Nolanâs computer screen, their faces just inches apart. She could see his eyebrows arch as if to say, âWhatâs wrong with that?â
After a momentâs thought, she made a decision. âNo, Mr. Harris, consider this a day off for you. Iâm taking you shopping for some new threads for tomorrow.â
âHey! How generous!â Nolan joked.
Regina spread her hands in mock surrender. âWhat can I do? You canât catch a wolf without setting a trap, and this was my idea, after all.â
He stood up, towering over Regina. She instinctively stepped back but bumped into the desk, trapping her between it and Nolan. He couldnât resist ruffling her hair-it felt as soft and playful as he had imagined, like petting a small animal.
âDonât worry about the expense, Ms. Tanner. Your wallet can take the day off too. Letâs call it an early day and get some rest.â
Shopping for Nolan turned out to be quicker than Regina had anticipated. Her keen eye and his model-
like figure meant that everything she picked out looked even better on him than on the mannequins.
Caught up in the moment, Regina ended up selecting several more outfits for him, each one accentuating his features perfectly.
