Leo couldnât believe how smooth the interrogation of Clara was going to be when Balfour assigned him the task. He had barely taken a seat across from her when Clara seemed ready to spill everything she knew.
âYou work for Balfour, donât you? This mess isnât my doing-I was set up! At worst, Iâm an accessory to the crime, but I absolutely canât go to jail. Iâve still got a bright future ahead of me.â
Her impulsiveness caused the officer to firmly guide her back to her seat.
âWerenât you all full of bluster before? Going on and on about not caring for your future, ready to go down with Ivy. Did we hear you wrong?â
The threats Clara had made when she had kidnapped Ivy were those of someone with nothing to lose, but now she seemed desperate to cling to life.
Clara snapped back, âIâve had an epiphany. Why should I take the fall for something I didnât do? I was a scapegoat, and I refuse to sit back and accept my fate. If thereâs a chance for me to turn things around, I wonât let myself be tied down here.â
Leo smirked. This womanâs ability to spin yarns was truly something, devoid of any logic.
One minute she was taking full responsibility, and she was claiming she was just a pawn the next. It was hard to tell what was truth and what was fiction in her tale.
âIf youâre saying someone else put you up to this, who would that be? Do you have any evidence?
Without it, everything youâre saying was futile.â
âWho else in this world hates Ivy more than Mara? Sheâs the one who approached me. I hesitated because, after all, Ivy is my half-sister. But Mara convinced me that once Ivy was out of the picture, I could make a comeback.â
Of course, Clara wasnât foolish enough to take Maraâs word as gospel. She had her evidence. Leaning forward, she teased, âYou know, I stumbled upon something quite interesting. I wonder if your boss is aware of itâ
Leo couldnât help but ask, âWhat?â
âHa, youâre not privy to that information. If you want to know, get Balfour himself to come here.â
Leo scoffed. Everyone wanted a piece of their boss, but the man wasnât available for just anyone.
âMs. Dunhill, itâs not realistic for you to meet my boss with your status.â
Despite the mockery, Clara wasnât offended. She simply told him, âJust let your boss know itâs about his âold flameâ. Heâll come to see me. Letâs wait and see.â
Leo bowed his head to hide his shock.
Ivy was still fighting for her life in the hospital, and now there was talk of an âold flameâ? Did Ivy even know about this?
At Maraâs house.
The smile on Maraâs face was strained. âBalfour, didnât you head back to the hospital? What brings you back again? Did you leave something behind?â
Balfour silently glanced past her to the tightly shut door, âI heard some noise and got worried, so I came back to check. Why was there such a commotion earlier?â
