Ellinor turned to Bertha. âBertha, itâs beyond a disciplinary issue now. Your stepdaughter just tried to splash me with a bottle of sulfuric acid. Thankfully, she missed me, but my husband was splashed a bit when he tried to protect me. Now, sheâs been taken away by the police.â
What?
Sulfuric acid?!
Bertha, Lea, and Marlinie were all shocked.
âHow dare she do such a thing!â Bertha could hardly believe it. She knew Sophia could be a little extreme, but she never expected this.
Once Lea got over her shock, she was filled with disgust. âWhy wouldnât she?! Dad has spoiled her since she was a child and has always cleaned up her messes, no matter what they were. Sheâs become too bold!â
Marlinie was more concerned about her daughter and son-in-law. âEllinor, are you sure youâre not hurt?â
Ellinor moved to the spot next to her mother and nodded. âIâm fine, Mom. Donât worry.â
Marlinie then looked towards Theo. âTheo, where are you hurt? Come here, let me see!âBooks Chapters Are Daily Updated Join & Stay Updated For All Books Updatesâ¦
Theo moved to Ellinorâs side, reassuring Marlinie that he was okay. âDonât worry, itâs just a minor injury.
Iâm fine.â
Marlinie held her daughterâs hand with fearful relief. âThank God youâre both okay!â
Once Bertha had calmed down, she took a deep breath and stepped forward. âEllinor, Mr. Blanchet, I apologize for what my stepdaughter has done to you. Iâm truly sorry!â
With that, she gave a sincere bow to Ellinor and Theo.
Ellinor quickly rose and helped Bertha up. âBertha, itâs not you who should be apologizing, but I hope you wonât blame us for what comes next for Sophia,â
Bertha shook her head helplessly. âHow could I blame you?! Sophia is beyond help. Facing legal justice might be the best for her. Ellinor, could I ask you both to look after your mother while I go and talk to my husband? Heâll be a mess when he hears about his precious daughterâs arrest. I donât want him to do anything rash.â
Ellinor nodded. âI understand. Thank you for looking after my mom these past few days. Weâll stay here. You go ahead.â
Bertha wiped away her tears, let out a sigh, and left with Lea.
While watching Berthaâs retreating figure, Ellinor began to feel a surge of complex emotions.
Marlinie, lying on the hospital bed, shook her head and sighed. âBertha has had a hard time over the years. She canât control hér stepdaughter, and her husband is a fool. Sheâs done her best.â
Ellinor turned to her mother. âMom, donât worry. Weâll only settle scores with Thaddeus and Sophia. We wonât involve Bertha or her daughter.â
Marlinie nodded but still felt a little sad. Even if they didnât involve Bertha, she knew that any harm to Thaddeus would hurt Bertha too.
As a mother, she couldnât ask her daughter to forgive those who had hurt them.
