Ellinor stopped eating and held her face in her hands while looking at him. âYou seem very optimistic and have a good personality.â
Bartlett smiled faintly. âAm I optimistic? Life isnât easy as the heir of a family like this. A strict upbringing left me with hardly any childhood, and because everyone knows Iâm an adopted son, they donât really respect me. Itâs hard for me to fit into their circle. When I first took over the company, the shareholders were very unhappy; they wanted to kick me out.â
Ellinor nodded sympathetically. âI can imagine how tough it must have been for you back then. But youâve overcome it, and now, who doesnât address you with respect as Mr. Rex?â
Bartlett chuckled bitterly. âDo you think they respect me behind my back? Itâs not just strangers, even Theo and the others are the same. They donât truly accept me. Your brother is the only person who doesnât hold back with me.â
In Ellinorâs view, Balfour was the most condescending person she had ever met.
Theo, Jonah, and Kemp had a closer bond, but they didnât look down on Bartlett.
Given the personalities of those three men, if they genuinely looked down on someone, they would never sit together.
âI donât think Theo is that kind of person. Donât overthink it.â Ellinor said calmly.
Bartlett narrowed his eyes. âAre you still defending Theo?â
Ellinor spoke candidly. âIâm not defending him; Iâm just stating facts. If he truly looked down on people, he wouldnât be spending time with someone like me.â
Bartlett smiled and said, âBut he doesnât treat you sincerely; otherwise, why are you leaving now?â
Ellinor fell silent.
That was the truth!
Why was she still defending Theo?
âNever mind, letâs not talk about him anymore. You should eat too.â Ellinor began to soften her attitude towards Bartlett.
Bartlett smiled. âItâs okay; Iâm happy to serve you.â
Ellinor rolled her eyes. âI canât finish so much food by myself, and eating alone is boring. Itâs more fun with you here.â
âAll right, Iâll eat with you.â Bartlett sat down and smiled as he joined her in eating grilled meat.
Ellinor began cutting her own meat.
âEllinor, do you know why I think weâre a good match?â Bartlett suddenly said.
Ellinor looked at him while eating. âHasnât the grilled meat filled your mouth yet?â
Bartlett laughed. âBut just eating without talking is pretty boring.â
Ellinor said, âHasnât anyone ever told you not to talk while eating?â
Bartlett smiled. He could tell that Ellinor was deliberately changing the subject, but he didnât want to give up; he wanted to express his feelings.
âEllinor, the reason I think weâre a good match is that I believe we have similar experiences, and our views and values are very similar. In comparison, you and Theo are like people from two different worlds that have been forced together. I believe weâre better suited for each other; we have more common ground.â
Ellinor really didnât want to discuss emotional issues with him. âThere are many people in the world with similar backgrounds and experiences; does that mean they should all be together? Bartlett, if you donât want to eat grilled meat, just leave it all to me. You should go home and rest!â
Bartlett smiled helplessly. âOkay, okay, I wonât say anymore. Is that alright?â
Theo pulled up to Chaseâs apartment.
