Over in another ward.
Marissa woke up from a coma, her head throbbing. She blinked hard and took a look around, finally recognizing her husband and Veronica by her side.
Seeing her grandma awake, Veronica tightly held her hand, her eyes welling up with tears, âGrandma, you finally woke up! You passed out all of a sudden. It scared the heck out of me and Grandpalâ
Although Putnam felt relieved, he frowned and said in a harsh tone, âI told you not to come to the hospital, but you insisted on coming. And what happened? You just caused more trouble!â
Marissa ignored her husbandâs words. She may have forgotten why she passed out, but she still remembered why she came to the hospital. She quickly sat up and grabbed Veronicaâs hand, âVeronica, howâs Ellinor? And the baby in her belly, howâs the little one?â
Veronicaâs face fell, unsure of how to answer her grandmaâs question. She was afraid that the truth would upset her grandma again, so she helplessly looked at her grandpa.
Putnam knew what his granddaughter was worried about: He grunted and didnât answer directly, âWaking up and worrying about others right away, you should care about yourself first!â
Marissa wasnât easily fooled. She shook her head, âIâm fine, just a little dizzy! Now tell me, how are Ellinor and the baby in her belly? Theyâre okay, right?â
Veronica fell silent.
Although Putnam was sitting in a wheelchair, his arms were long enough to push Marissa back onto the bed, âAll right, all right! Youâre still very weak, Stop worrying about others! Letâs wait for the doctor to check your blood pressure and heart, then we can go home and discuss other things.â
Marissa frowned and sat up again, âI know my own body, Iâm fine! Besides, how can you consider Ellinor as âothersâ? Sheâs Theoâs wife, carrying a Blanchet family baby in her belly! How can I not worry?â.
Putnam frowned, deliberately raising his voice, âHow do you know the baby in her belly is ours? I heard she left the Blanchet family for a while before we came back and got pregnant not long after. Who can be sure whose baby it is? Veronica, right?â
Hearing her grandpaâs question, Veronica was stunned. She never doubted the baby in Ellinorâs belly was her brotherâs, but her grandpa was saying this on purpose to mislead her grandma so she wouldnât be so sad.
Veronica understood her grandpaâs intention, but she didnât want to tarnish the reputation of the late Ellinor until her grandpa cleared his throat and glared at her.
âUh⦠Grandma, Ellinor did leave my brother for a while⦠and she seems to be pretty popularâ¦â
Finally, for her grandmaâs sake, she had to go along with her grandpa.
With his granddaughterâs cooperation, Putnam continued, âSee! Even Veronica knows there are plenty of people around Ellinor. Who knows what she did in the month she left Theo? You canât always judge a book by its cover, and I think you shouldnât trust Ellinor too much. We can find another wife for Theo.
There are many women willing to have Theoâs baby! Weâre not in a hurry for a baby!â
After Putnam finished speaking, Marissaâs brows furrowed deeper. As if she understood something, she demanded, âBoth of you, tell me the truth. What happened to Ellinor?â
Veronica thought to herself.
It seemed Grandpaâs words didnât work. They couldnât fool Grandma!
Putnam sighed helplessly and tried to persuade Marissa again, âEven if something happened to her, it has nothing to do with our family. After all, she and Theo were never officially married. Sheâs not a formal daughterâinâlaw of the Blanchet family! Donât take it too seriously!â
