WILLOW
Jenna and I are making our way back to Alpha McCallâs pack. As we pass, pack members greet us with friendly waves and warm smiles. I keep my eyes peeled, scanning the crowd as we move through.
âHave you noticed any of the returnees showing a particular interest in our training or the functions weâre here for?â I ask Jenna.
âHmm, a couple come to mind. I thought they were just flirting, trying to get close to some of the warriors. Why do you ask?â She glances around, as if expecting to spot the ones Iâm referring to.
Deciding to keep our conversation private, I choose to link with her.
~âAndrei suspects that the vampires might have human spies among the returnees. Humans whoâve been enthralled to keep tabs on us and report back to their vampire masters. Itâs an old trick, but it gives them a way to gather information without having to be here themselves.â~
âWait, he thinks the humans whoâve returned are spying on us? Why would they do that?â
âBecause Mihai doesnât like being outsmarted. Heâll want revenge on this pack. And this time, heâll be among them. His pride wonât let him forget how we denied him the pack and took one of his favored generals.â
âOkay, that changes things. There are two women whoâve returned and seem to be around a lot. I thought they were just being flirty, but now⦠I donât think theyâve managed to gather much information, though.
âOur team doesnât really share much. Only Thorne and Alpha McCall are kept in the loop about our operations here. We never write anything down and we only talk when weâre sure weâre alone. We even use sentries during our meetings.â
âI want them watched more closely. I have to make a small detour tonight. I need to visit the caves. Have Reuben and Thorne ready to assist, just in case I need backup.â
âIâll link them now. Your tent is ready for you. Iâll arrange for some food to be sent over and have Victor show you the new tech and cameras that have been installed since you left. Iâm sure Alpha McCall will want to brief you as well.
âTraining has been going really well. Many of the pack women have started to step up and learn to fight too. Iâll point out the two women I think youâre talking about.â Jenna grins. âAnd congratulations on the mate bond with Andrei. You two are a good match.â
âWillow!â Reuben calls out, rushing over to give me a tight hug. âSoâ¦?â
âSo, what?â Iâm confused.
He leans in closer. âDid you find a way to save your mate without killing him?â He snickers.
I nod and grin. âBut the day isnât over yet,â I respond, laughing.
I step into my tent and toss my duffle bag under my cot. Reuben and Jenna follow me inside, taking seats while I sit on the cot.
âTonight, Iâm going on a reconnaissance mission. I want you and Thorne to join me, Reuben. Jenna, keep an eye on those two women. Donât let them out of your sight. In fact, check with Victor and review the video footage from the past week. See if theyâve left the pack at any point. I want them watched at all times from now on.â
âWho are we watching?â Reuben asks.
âBeth and Selma,â Jenna answers.
âThe two humans who are always hanging around?â
âThose are the ones. Andrei thinks they might be enthralled to spy on us,â Jenna explains.
Reubenâs eyes widen. âOkay. What exactly does that mean?â
âIt means theyâre being used as spies. They havenât been turned, theyâre just being used to gather information for the vampires. Once theyâve served their purpose, the vampire will kill them.
âTheyâre puppets, lured in with false promises. Theyâll never be turned. The vampire has enthralled them, hypnotized them, to do his bidding. In the end, because heâs fed them his blood to control their minds, theyâll die when he does, or heâll drain them dry and kill them himself.â
âAnd you think Beth and Selma are the targets?â he asks Jenna.
âEver since theyâve been back in the pack, theyâve been hanging around a lot. Always nearby, asking questions, watching the training, trying to be close when we have security meetings.â She raises her eyebrows. âHavenât you noticed?â
He shrugs. âI thought they were just looking for a mate. They seemed harmless.â
âThatâs the perfect cover. Theyâre unassuming, but always nearby, always watching, always listening,â I answer.
âOkay. Iâll⦠Iâll go tell Thorne weâll be on backup duty tonight.â Reuben stands. âAlpha McCall will be here soon to talk to you.â He turns to leave, then pauses and looks back. âIs your mate joining us this time?â
âHeâs already here. Heâs with Eros and the Fae.â I smile.
âThey wonât know what hit them, will they?â He grins.
âThey wonât see whatâs coming.â I grin back.
