Chapter 863:
âItâs been some time since I last cooked. I might be a bit out of practice. Let me know how it tastes.â
Harlee ate little. Since Rhysâ incident, she had been eating sparingly. She feared overeating might upset her stomach, and she didnât want to cause concern for Bettie and Baldrick by getting sick right here.
Bettie asked with concern, âDoes the food not meet your liking today?â
Harlee shook her head.
âNo, itâs not like that. Itâs just been so long since I had your cooking. I want to take my time with it.â
Bettieâs smile grew.
âThen you should visit more often. Iâll cook for you each time.â
Tonya, playfully poking at the beef on her plate, teased, âBettie, youâre playing favorites. What about me?â
Without missing a beat, Bettie popped a piece of beef into Tonyaâs mouth.
âHere, this is how much I care about you.â
âMmmâ¦â Tonya munched on the beef, her cheeks puffing out cutely.
The atmosphere around the table was warm, offering Harlee a much-needed break.
Meanwhile, in a suburban home outside Baythorn, Haleâs backup plan was unfolding.
Kiaan Burke, the bailiff known for soothing Lindsay in court, sat on a couch, chain-smoking.
As Kiaan remained inactive, impatience brewed among the others.
âKiaan, whatâs our next move? What are we waiting for?â

Kiaanâs expression darkened upon hearing this.
He crushed out his cigarette and looked around with a menacing glare. If he had known what to do, he wouldnât have been sitting here smoking.
âYou fools! Canât you think for yourselves?â Kiaan cursed inwardly.
Since Haleâs capture, Kiaan had been out of sorts, pondering how to distance himself from the situation.
He hadnât even considered executing Haleâs directives. That idea had never crossed his mind.
Anyway, as a bailiff, he held a stable position.
But once he began carrying out Haleâs orders, there would be no going back.
Pausing to think, Kiaan dismissed the room with a wave and murmured, âIâm out of ideas.
Do any of you have one?â
The tallest of the group leaned in.
âBefore Hale was taken, he told us to follow through with his plans if needed. I say we go after the Green family as per Haleâs plots.â
Kiaan shook his head.
âAnd what happens after the attack? How do we escape back to Uwhor?â The tallest man faltered.
Kiaan quickly added, âYour suggestion just inspired me. Since Rhys had vanished, Harlee must value the Green family. What if we capture Rhysâ parents? Securing a boat or some escape means should be simple, right?â The others grimaced. To them, the risk was too high, and failure would be disastrous.
Dead people couldnât cause trouble. The living, however, introduced unpredictable factors.
