Chapter 469:
âAnd this, my dear, is the very essence of temptation.â
Rhys settled into Harleeâs embrace, his tone relaxed and enchanting.
âThen why donât you just charm me like this?â
Harlee playfully nudged his head away, teasing, âGet cheeky!â
Rhys lifted his gaze, locking eyes with Harleeâs sparkling ones.
He leaned in, his lips nearly brushing hers when a loud cough abruptly broke the moment.
It was Brenton.
Suppressing a laugh, Harlee stepped away from Rhys and turned to greet Brenton.
âOh, Brenton, what are you doing here?â she said with a casual wave.
Brentonâs expression was cold as he grabbed Harlee by her shirt and pulled her slightly toward him.
âI came here to put a stop to this,â he declared firmly.
Brenton gave a stern look at Rhys and raised his fist, poised to strike.
Noticing Rhysâ composed and respectful posture, Brenton slowly relaxed his hand.
âKeep your distance from Harlee, or I wonât hold back next time,â he said sternly, his voice low.
Though Harlee felt sympathy for Rhys, she recognized that if she were in Brentonâs place, she might have reacted more harshly.

âBrenton, have you made your point? Can we let him speak now?â Harlee asked, hoping to defuse the tension.
She knew Brenton was upset with Rhys because of the broken engagement, believing that Rhys wasnât sincere with her. Noticing that Brenton stayed aloof, even attempting to pull her away, Harlee had no choice but to resort to her final move.
She leaned in close and whispered in Brentonâs ear, âI kind of like himâ¦â
Brenton sighed.
âLook at you.â His voice softened slightly.
âWhat do you see in him?â
With Brentonâs reluctant nod, Rhys seized the moment to clarify the misunderstanding.
âBrenton, I understand why youâre disappointed in me because of my reckless cancellation of the engagement. If I were in your position, I might have been even more furious than you.
But at the time, I was blinded by my feelings and overlooked the impact of my actionsâ¦â
âI now realize how much I hurt Harlee, and for that, Iâm sincerely sorry.â
Rhys then bowed deeply, a gesture of profound respect and apology.
Brenton looked visibly uncomfortable with the formality, caught off guard by Rhysâ sincerity.
Seeing an opportunity, Rhys affirmed his commitment to Harlee, promising to be as trustworthy as anyone in her family.
