Chapter 258:

Realizing the danger of being so transparent, she decided to postpone her meeting with Matteo. Someone as shrewd and calculating as Matteo, capable of unraveling her thoughts, could place her in real peril.

Reflecting on her next move, Harlee sent a message to Ritchie.

“Push back the meeting with Matteo. Tell him I’ve got something else to handle first.” She closed the WhatsApp app and leaned back, her mind already on the tasks ahead.

She paused, noticing that Rhys hadn’t spoken again or ended the call.

In a relaxed, casual tone, she asked, “Anything else?”

Rhys chuckled softly.

“No. Just happy to know you’re still there.”

Harlee was puzzled. Was he hinting at something? His roundabout approach caught her off guard. Slightly frustrated, she replied, “I’ve got things to do, so I’m hanging up now.” Without waiting to hear if Rhys had more to say, she ended the call.

She never lingered on conversations with men who didn’t capture her interest.

The phone beeped several times, signaling the call’s disconnection.

Rhys didn’t immediately put his phone away. Instead, he stared at it for a moment, letting the screen go dark on its own before slipping it into his pocket.

“Mr. Green, we’re ready to leave,” Hamilton announced.

Rhys gave a slight nod, buttoned up his coat, and slid his hands into his pockets as he settled into the back seat.

Despite their brief exchange, which hadn’t lasted more than ten sentences, Rhys felt inexplicably uplifted.

A fleeting smile crossed his deep-set eyes, betraying a quiet sense of fascination.

Hamilton spoke again.

“About the Sanderson family—”

“Shut up,” Rhys interrupted sharply, his brow furrowing in an instant.

At that moment, Rhys’ tablet lit up with a news alert. The headline read: “Shocking! Miss Sanderson promises to put Adelina Gill in jail within an hour…”

Rhys glanced at the alert and dismissed it with visible irritation. That Sanderson girl certainly knew how to stir up drama.

Perfect.

This could serve as the perfect excuse to cancel the engagement when he returned.

An hour later, Harlee arrived at the university square as planned, but the area was swarmed with onlookers, making it impossible to get through. Luckily, there were students from the Aerospace Mechanical Engineering Department nearby. They called out together, “Miss Sanderson has arrived,” and the previously impenetrable crowd quickly made space.

Harlee raised her eyebrows slightly, her eyes narrowing into a frosty stare that was particularly intimidating. She advanced at a measured pace, her commanding presence causing those around her to instinctively give ground. Whispers filled the air around her.
