Chapter 1018:
But in the end, logic took over.
He could fade away quietly, but Harlee couldnât bear any more harm.
Suddenly, the ringtone set up exclusively for Harlee sounded. Rhys sat up eagerly, staring at the words âLeeâ on the screen, his face breaking into a wide smile.
Harlee was calling him⦠What on earth should he do? He longed to answerâ¦
At that moment, Christopher entered through another hidden door, forcing Rhys to place his phone down beside him. Rhys frowned, clearly irritated, his voice tinged with anger.
âIs there an issue with Anika?â
âNo, Anika hasnât noticed anything,â Christopher quickly updated Rhys on Anikaâs and Eugeniaâs recent activities, then hesitantly asked, âMay I know what will happen to Anika once everything is finished?â
Christopher kept his gaze lowered, not daring to meet Rhysâ eyes.
Rhys didnât respond immediately. Instead, he checked his phone repeatedly.
Harleeâs call was nearing its endâ¦
He was so tempted to pick it upâ¦
Christopher assumed Rhys was upset and hastily said, âI understand itâs wrong for me to have feelings for Anika, but Iâ¦â
âBut you canât help it!â Rhys cut Christopher off, his voice cold.
âChristopher, do you realize what youâre doing right now?â

Feelings couldnât be suppressed. If they could, Rhys wouldnât have repeatedly sought out Harlee due to his overwhelming longing, only to act like he no longer cared for her for the sake of his grand plan.
So, Rhys wasnât angry about Christopherâs affection toward Anika.
He just hoped that, looking back, Christopher wouldnât feel regret.
Christopher hesitated.
Did he understand what he was doing? He didnât, and that was why he felt uncertain.
Since learning that Anika was the daughter of his fatherâs killer, Christopher had been off his game these past few days, aside from playing the role of Rhys. On several occasions, he almost made a mistake. That was why he had gathered the courage to ask Rhys about Anikaâs fate.
âIâll give you a week to figure things out. You donât need to play my part during this time.
Come back when youâre ready,â Rhys said calmly.
âMr. Green, Iâ¦â
Rhys interrupted again.
âThe plan will continue as planned with or without you. You donât need to carry so much weight.â
Apart from Hamilton, who had been by Rhysâ side for years, Christopher was the subordinate Rhys trusted most, so Rhys had always been lenient with him.
Christopher hesitated for a moment before turning around and heading out through the private exit.
Before Christopher left, Rhys couldnât resist answering his original question.
âAs long as Anika doesnât harm Harlee, I can spare her life.â
