She didn't look right. That was the first thing I noticed. Her hair was disheveled, her clothes were torn and messy. She looked like she came straight out of the jungle.
Jacob immediately stepped in front of me so that I couldn't see her anymore. "Has your brain stopped working? Oh, wait that's already happened. " He said. "We told you not to come here anymore." His voice raised slightly towards the end.
"I'm sorry," was the only thing she said in reply. She looked so sincere and anyone would be inhuman not to believe her.
But I didn't fall for it. I would never fall for it. It was different with Dad. He didn't constantly berate Justin and I for years with not an ounce of regret in his heart. It was her.
"You're leaving," Jacob said. He grabbed her arm and dragged her outside. "No you don't understand," she said. "Yes we do, now leave!"
"Please. I can't go back. Don't you see I need your help? Maybe you can be helpful for once and lend it," she said. Her tone changed slightly but she still kept up the same act.
"After all, I have done for you," she said stepping in my direction. Jacob was quick to pull me back. He gave her a glare.
She didn't say anything as she bent down and picked up her bag that I hadn't noticed was on the ground until now.
"You really think you can do this hmm? I realized the mistakes I've made, but are you really not going to take me back?" She asked.
The way she said it was way too calm. I didn't like it.
"You are pass insane. I don't even think there is a word describing you right now," Jacob said shaking his head.
She put her bag on her shoulder and simply looked at us. I don't know why I haven't left yet. I just felt much safer standing next to Jacob then I would going upstairs alone.
"I know I have failed you once and because of that my life is now in ruins. So...since I can't have a good life, neither should any of you."
My eyes nearly fell out of their socket when she pulled something out of her bag. It was shiny and metallic and I instantly recognized it to be a gun.
"What are you doing?" Jacob asked slowly. I was now hidden behind him completely but I still didn't know what to do.
"Get inside," was all she said in reply. She discreetly hid the gun and pointed it directly at Jacob. I held his hand tight, not knowing what to do. He squeezed mines back in hopes of calming me down but it wasn't working.
My mother was crazy, that much was obvious. But this....certainly she wouldn't turn to shooting her own children.
I could feel the fear already coursing through me. She had all the control right now and she knew it.
"Veronica," Jacob said slowly. "What are you doing?"
"Stop asking me that!" She shouted briefly gripping her hair. "Just-Just sit down," she said. Right now I wish I was like a superhero or something. Maybe the hulk. Then I could just step on her.
Jacob guided me to the couch all the while keeping me behind him. She was watching us intently the whole time.
"Just sit here okay?" He whispered to me. I nodded shakily. Tears were already threatening to fall. I didn't want anything bad to happen. Especially to Jacob.
"Nothings gonna happen," he said noticing the tears that refused to stay inside. "Okay now we are going to wait until everyone gets here," my mother said.
"What are you doing this for? Just take what you want," Jacob said. "Shut up and sit down!" I jumped when she shouted.
I've seen her this angry before, but after not being in those situations for a long time it brought back lots of unwanted memories.
"Okay, okay," Jacob said sitting next to me. I sat as close to him as possible. I just couldn't take my eyes off of the gun. Every movement she made scared me to death. At any moment she could just point..and shoot.
"I just need to get some money then I'll leave," she kept whispering to herself over and over. She was absolutely crazy. That gun.
She had such a tight grip on it that even if someone tried to take it out of her hand they wouldn't be able to. As if remembering something she briefly left the living room and went to the kitchen.
I felt Jacobs hand on my face then he turned my head so that I was looking at him. "Okay, I am going to distract her and I need you to take my phone and run out of here as fast as you can and get help," he said looking at me.
I immediately shook my head at what he said. Was he crazy? He wanted me to go and leave him here all alone with our psycho mother.
"I can't do that," I said already feeling the tears fall down my face. He wiped them with his finger. "Yes, you can. We don't have much time before she comes back. You can do it," he said nodding.
"But Jacob." My voice unexpectantly cracked. If something happened to him I would rather it happen to me too.
"Why can't you just come with me? We can both run out of here," I said. "No, because she is going to end up shooting either herself or someone else," he said.
I know he was a cop in training but he didn't have to take it so seriously. I suddenly burst out in tears and hugged Jacob. I hated that he had to be so brave. I wish he was a scaredy-cat like me sometimes. Then he wouldn't be doing this.
He rubbed my back and kissed my hair. "Everything is going to be alright. Everything is going to be fine," he said before making me face him again.
"Now go. I am going to try to take the gun from her. Make sure you let Jason know so they won't come home."
I simply nodded. What he was doing was very dangerous. I hugged him one more time. As tight as I could. I let go then Jacob stood up. He left his phone where he sat and I took it and put it in my sweatshirt pocket.
"Veronica I know what you're looking for," he said which caught her attention. She glanced back at me and I quickly wiped the tears away. I couldn't give anything away.
"Okay, where is it?" She asked. She still had the gun in her hand but thankfully wasn't pointing it at anyone.
Jacob cautiously walked in the direction away from the front door. And surprisingly enough my mom followed him. It was like she was too out of it to even ask how Jacob knew what she was looking for.
Jacob glanced at me one last time before he was out of sight around the corner.
I took that as my chance to run as fast and quietly out of the house as possible. I kept running until I was sure I was far enough. I decided to stop by a deserted store where I could call Jason.
I shakily dialed his number on Jacobs phone. Every second that went by was scarier than the last. I kept looking around every second, scared I would see my mom pop up from somewhere.
Jason finally answered the phone.
"Yeah what's up Jacob?"
"Jason it's me, Lisa."
"Lisa? What's wrong? You sound scared."
"You have to come. Mom was at home when Jacob and I came from the cafe and she had a gun and-"
"Wait, wait slow down. What do you mean? Is Jacob okay? Are you okay?"
I couldn't stop myself from breaking down again.
"I don't know. He told me to run and call you. I don't know what's happening."
"Okay, okay. Calm down. Where are you then?" I could hear the worry evident in his voice. I could also hear Dylan and Justin in the background asking a bunch of questions.
I swallowed hard so that I could at least be audible.
"Uum I am by the old Grocery store," I said.
"Okay, sweetie stay right where you are. I am coming okay?" He said. I nodded but then realized he couldn't see me.
"Okay."
"Alright don't hang up the phone," he said.
I decided to sit on one of the steps until he got here. I physically couldn't stop shaking, my breathing was fast, and my heart was about to beat its way through my chest. I wiped at the tears that kept falling. How could one of the best days ever turn so horrible so fast?
"We are almost there Lisa," I heard Dylan say. I didn't say anything as I tried to focus on my breathing. There was already a lot going on, we didn't need to add my panic attacks to the list.
I buried my head in my hands as I waited. The only reassuring thing I had was the sound of Jason driving on the other line.
"Lisa, you still with me?" Jason asked.
"Yes."
I heard a sound behind me but before I could react I felt a sharp pain right before everything went black.
~Overprotective~
Hello everyone. I'm now I'm gonna get killed I'm so sorry for leaving another cliffhanger. I don't usually do cliffhangers and I promise this is my last one. Or maybe the next one not sure. (Don't kill me)
Guys ðwhen I tell you that coming up with the title takes the longest I am not kidding. Thats why as you can see my titles have become more and more......simple? Lol
But anyway. This chapter is a little shorter because the next will belong. Just saying lots of questions will be answered in the next chap.
Also wanted to say this book is coming near its end. :(. I don't want it to, but it had to end at some point right?
Anyway, I feel like we have gotten far enough that I don't need to say what to do so I hope everyone is having a great day/night wherever you are in the world.
Until next time...
